Caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide), also known as Caustic Sodium, is a white crystalline substance used to make soaps with the "cold" method. It is an essential component of soaps prepared using this method.

The use of caustic soda requires special care as when dissolved in water it causes a strongly exothermic reaction. The handling of caustic soda requires the use of protective clothing (goggles, gloves suitable for contact with chemical substances and special clothing). Caustic soda should also only be handled in very well ventilated areas. Failure to comply with the above instructions may result in serious burns, vision problems, breathing problems, etc.
